NBC’s “The Book of Daniel”… Reactions

On January 6, the folks at NBC will be a launching a new drama entitled The Book of Daniel. The show follows an Episcopalian priest who fights an addiction to painkillers and finds help in Jesus Christ.

What a great message! Wrong! It turns out that the “Jesus Christ” that the priest finds solace in is a “modern-day incarnation” played by Garrett Dillahunt, a “hip, modern Jesus” (Source) who of course happens to be a long-haired, handsome white guy. (That’s quite a contrast from the Jesus Christ of history, who had a short hair style, had a darker skin tone [he was a Jew, not an American!], and was said to have had no beauty in Him.)

People’s lust for something physical which they can see and feel to satisfy their spiritual needs, truly, will be their condemnation. God is Spirit, and we must worship Him in spirit and in truth. We cannot see Him, nor do we need to.

Further, this new sitcom would seem to imply that Jesus has returned to Earth and spends His time helping a priest with drug problems. This denies the fact that God has told us Jesus will be at the right hand of the Father acting as Intercessor for us until the time of His return, which will not be solely to a lone priest, but will be in power as He conquers the forces of evil and at last sets up the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth.

The Book of Daniel illustrates both how ignorant Americans are of the word of God, and how little reverence is actually shown toward it. That lost people find it entertaining is no surprist, though it is sorrowful that there will be those within Christendom who enjoy this series and may actually applaud it.

Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

  1. I am disgusted with this kind of smut being shown on television. Why can’t they keep their garbage to themselves.

  2. The show does not imply that Jesus Christ “has returned to Earth and spends His time helping a priest with a drug problem”. Daniel merely “talks” to Christ as a way to verbalize his own inner struggles as a man dealing with his family’s problems and as a priest dealing with the problems of his church.

  3. I have no problem with a person talking to Christ, but the show actually has “Christ” appearing on Earth in bodily form. Such has not occurred for over 1,900 years, and won’t again occur until the onset of the Kingdom of Heaven. Even in Scripture Christ never appears bodily in more than one place; for Him to be in bodily form talking to this priest, He cannot be at the right hand of the Father bodily interceding for us, which is where Scripture says He is.

  5. I’m not sure how to take this yet. I have a feeling it will turn out like “joan of arcadia”. I’m certain it will be twisted and “artistic” in the liberal, continuing revelataion sort of way, but maybe I’ll be proven wrong. I hope so. I get so sick of Hollywood creating the only watchable faith oriented programs. When will us conservatives get our heads out of our backsides and do something well enough for the world to notice it. I guess that’s partly the nature of our struggle, but also I think we’ve bred laziness into our victim attitude… or something like that. Merry Christmas everyone. I can’t wait to meet you all some day in Heaven. Just make sure you get there.

  6. Nathan, from what I’ve heard, “The Book of Daniel” will be worse than I had originally thought and posted about. From what I’ve read, the show will also feature various forms of sinful sexuality as well as drug usage.

It will be very interesting to see how such things are viewed in the show, as well as just how explicit the depictions are.

I thank God often I do not have cable nor an antenna on the TVs we have.

  7. I have to say this has got to be one of the worst shows that I have seen coming on in a long time. I heard about the show a couple days ago. Tonight I’m talking to my youth group about this show to warn them about the trash that NBC is putting on TV. To say Jesus is on earth is crazy, believe me when Jesus comes back EVERYONE will know. But I know the Bible tells us that things are going to get worse. But the people who write this stuff will have to face the facts someday so I’ll let God judge them.

  8. In today’s newspaper here, there was a rather large article concerning the show which described it as “wholesome” and representative of normal people in normal lives (including normal church leaders).

Friends, if your pastor or bishop has a gay son, a drunkard wife, a drug problem, a promiscuous son, and a drug dealing daughter (as does the main character in this show), he has no business running a church.

A bishop must be blameless. A bishop must rule his house well.

Just those two qualifications make the church leader of this show an unqualified, usurper of authority who has as the least of his worries a drug problem.
