Simplifying the Overly Complicated Matter of Modest, Proper Dress

Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments… 1 Timothy 2:9, NASB

I find it interesting that Christians can spend so much time figuring out what proper clothing is,:”(Which, according to some, involves checks on the hemline, neckline, fit, form, and fabric of the clothing.)”: but so often neglect the latter half of the verse. Dress in modest apparel, not with… and the Holy Spirit goes on to give some explicits regarding how women should not adorn themselves.

Regardless of your beliefs regarding skirts, dresses, culottes, and so on, this would appear obvious from the verse: You are not adorned properly, modestly, and discreetly if your hair is braided or if you are adorned with gold, silver, or expensive clothing.

Now, all of that doesn’t matter to liberal Christians who feel free to relegate certain portions of Scripture to a past time so that they can avoid its teachings,:”(Though it should be noted the specific teachings regarding women in 1 Timothy 2 are given universal and timeless reasons in verses 13 and 14.)”: but to those who love the word of God enough to dress discreetly and modestly in proper apparel, consider that the verse makes it easier on your decision making by explicitly defining some things which are not proper.
