Matthew 16:28 — Did Jesus Lie?

I want to give an example of what I was talking about in the previous entry, about unbelievers laying claims against a Bible they themselves refuse to (or, more properly, cannot) understand: Matthew 16:28.

At first glance, it would appear that Jesus is a liar here. At least, it would appear like that if one hasn’t studied. Jesus said, “There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.”

It is said that Jesus had to have lied because those men He spoke to have certainly died, and He still hasn’t come in His kingdom.

So, let’s look at it this way… When Christ comes in His kingdom, why would believers die? Death will be done away with! So we see that Christ isn’t talking about that far into the future; His second advent is not in view here.

Christ came in His kingdom when He arose from the dead, glorious and magnified in His own power, ready to ascend to Heaven and assume His place at the Father’s right hand. Certainly, those men Christ spoke to that day were alive to see this day.

Also, we must keep in mind that there are more kingdoms than just the Kingdom of Heaven, that earthly Kingdom everyone seems to think of first. It is that kingdom that the Jews have awaited for millennia, and it is that kingdom which will be inaugurated about 7 years after the saved of our age are united with the Lord. Speaking of which, the saved of our day represent another kingdom, the Kingdom of God, which is a spiritual kingdom, invisible to those whose hearts are set on earthly affairs. Christ has come in this kingdom, and from the beginning it has been imbued with power to outlast even the mightiest of empires and persecutions.
