A Decent Shot at Life

3,500 Aborted Daily

It was a spur of the moment decision; I saw the book on the shelf today at work and determined that at the end of the day, before going home, I would buy it, that I would give it a read and get to know this man for myself from his own words — not the words of friends, bloggers, or that other media.

The book? The Audacity of Hope by President Barack Obama. A few people will be proud that I’m reading this book by a man I so adamantly wish wasn’t our nation’s most powerful leader. My conservative friends will probably think I’m off my rocker for reading through it (to satiate at least some of them, I plan on reading Ann Coulter’s Guilty next).

I’m not very far into Audacity at all — I’m somewhere in the middle of the “Prologue” of all things — but I came across a few of the President’s words which stood out to me, serving as a reminder of just why I didn’t vote for him:

…government couldn’t solve all their problems. But with a slight change in priorities we could make sure every child had a decent shot at life and meet the challenges we faced as a nation. The Audacity of Hope, p. 7

I appreciate the President’s admitting that the government cannot solve all of our problems. The government attempts to solve too many of our problems as it is, especially at the federal level. In that regard, I agree with politicians, such as Congressman Ron Paul, who advocate for a substantially more limited federal government.

The words that caught my attention, though, were the President’s hope that “with a slight change in priorities we could make sure every child had a decent shot at life.”

President Obama is shifting priorities in Washington alright, but it isn’t toward any semblance of giving “every child a decent shot at life.”

Unless of course by determining to make abortion even easier and accessible and thereby reducing the number of children being born, the government would be more able to tend to those children who do “make the cut” and are not slain by the abortionist’s sword. But something as convoluted as that couldn’t possibly be true, right?

I am ashamed that the government has stood idly by for decades while helpless infants are being murdered; where is their “decent shot at life,” President Obama? I’m sure you’re thankful you were given a shot at life, Mr. President. What about the children who have lost their chance since abortion was legalized?

Well said. I couldn’t agree with you more.

Could not have said it any better!

It’s so refreshing to read something that’s political in nature and NOT want to throw things at my computer.

Thanks, Rick. :)

If abortion were made illegal, what sort of punishment (under the law) should a woman be subject to if she had one illegally?

Rick Beckman February 7, 2009 at 22:29

Well, ultimately that’s for judges to decide; however, the penalty for taking a life is a non-negotiable in the Scriptures — both before and after the Law of Moses was given: life for life, for man was made in the image of God.

I know that this will be scene as excessively harsh by the vast majority of people out there which is why, of course, it will never happen in a democracy; however, to understand the value of life in the sight of God and to hate murder as much as He does, the punishment seems increasingly just and decreasingly harsh.

However, I can just about guarantee that if abortion was made illegal and offenders were given a guaranteed death sentence, it’d be a rare event indeed to actually have to enforce it.

I have a dream, in which one day, the strong, living people of this world will stand up for the unspoken rights of young children, and stand with them against the unspeakable horror of abortion. This is the greatest human rights violation of all time, which is swept under the nation. Adolf Hitler’s name is the curse of every generation for a million years, but the democratic governments of the Western World have taken more innocent lives than he.

One day, I hope we will look back at this atrocity with the same horror and sense of indignation with which we now view the holocaust or the slavery of African Americans.

Well said, Brandon. I share that dream with you.

There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: 17haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, 19a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers. Proverbs 6:16–19

Arrogance? Dishonesty? Murder of the innocents? Wickedness? An enjoyment of evil? Perjury? “Stirring the pot”?

I can’t help but think of this passage when people claim that America isn’t in the Bible; there she is, right in the Bible’s little book of wisdom, and God declares His hate for not only her actions but for her (i.e., the “hands” that shed innocents’ blood, the “tongue” that lies… Not just the murder or the lies).

In light of that, it is no surprise that so much effort is put forth in America to color God as an omnibenevolent Santa Claus-deity. To preach God as He truly is would require telling millions of Americans that their pride, their complacency regarding abortion, their acceptance of wicked lifestyles… are hated by He who can destroy our souls.

Oh that we as a nation of professed believers would repent of those things which God despises so that we may more fully experience Jesus Christ, the Lamb who was slain to take away the sins of all who believe.

I’m sure you have the same lamentations for Canada, Brandon. May God grant repentance to both our nations.

You mentioned Obama was “given a shot at life,” a few weeks ago CatholicVote.com put this video out to remind us all of that – Life, Imagine the Potential.

Rick Beckman February 8, 2009 at 14:46

I linked to that video in the post. ;)
